Who is Cody Poteet? A scouting report on the newest Cubs pitcher

1 month agoLance Brozdowski

The Cubs acquired 30-year-old right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet from the New York Yankees in exchange for Cody Bellinger and $5 million in cash Tuesday afternoon.

Poteet was drafted by the Marlins in the 4th round of the 2015 draft out of UCLA. He pitched in parts of 8 seasons with the Marlins before electing free agency at the end of the 2022 season, just months after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

In 2024, he amassed only 53 innings pitched after spending much of the season on the IL with a triceps strain.

Poteet features a five-pitch mix: 4-seam, sinker, sweeper, curveball, and changeup. Much of his velocity sits below the major league average for right-handed pitchers. His 4-seam, for example, sat at 93.3 mph last year, just over 1 mph lower than the average. In 2022, he sat at 95 mph. Perhaps his injury-riddled past few seasons have had an impact on his explosiveness.

To right-handed hitters, he threw his 4-seam, sinker and sweeper a combined 83%. To left-handed hitters, he pulls down his sweeper usage and pushes up his changeup, while still throwing his two fastballs above 20%.

“Stuff” models, which project how a pitch will perform solely on the characteristics of the offering (velocity, movement, release), think his fastballs are both below-average pitches, while his sweeper, curveball and changeup are all above average. The horizontal break of his slider combined with its velocity makes the offering his highest-graded pitch.

From a development standpoint, the low-hanging fruit adjustment is for Poteet to add a “bridge” slider, or a pitch that sits in between his big sweeper and the rest of his mix. Perhaps this was something the Yankees intended to do but failed to get across the finish line due to Poteet’s injuries.

There’s also an opportunity for more sinker versus right-handed hitters. Despite the poor “stuff” grade, it performed well in his small sample of MLB innings in 2024.
