Over 149 seasons of baseball throughout Cubs franchise history, there are bound to be some truly epic games.
We look back on the biggest comebacks of the last 40 years, with the Cubs rallying back from several 7-run and 8-run deficits and even erasing a 9-0 lead to claim victory.

10. Aug. 28, 2024 – 7 runs
We begin with the most recent comeback on this list, from August of this past season.
The Cubs jumped out to 1-0 and 3-1 leads over the Pirates and phenom Paul Skenes. But Pittsburgh battled back with 5 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning and eventually built a 10-3 lead.
Then Christian Bethancourt happened.
The Cubs’ backup catcher drove in 7 runs total, including a 2-run shot in the 7th, a 2-run double in the 8th and a 2-run single in the 9th.

9. April 11, 2023 – 7 runs
In another recent entry, we rewind back to a mid-April tilt between the Cubs and Mariners in 2023.
Seattle built a 7-0 lead after the top of the 2nd inning but the Cubs scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 3rd en route to a 14-9 victory.
Nelson Velázquez supplied the big blast with a grand slam in the 3rd inning that gave the Cubs the lead for good.

8. June 19, 2009 – 7 runs
A blast from the past that hits hard with the nostalgia.
Not only is the 2009 Cubs team rife with household names (Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee, Geovany Soto, Rich Harden) but the Cleveland squad had several players that are well known to Cubs fans – Mark DeRosa, Kerry Wood, Luis Valbuena.
And a couple of those players met for an epic moment – Lee homered off Wood in the bottom of the 9th inning to send the game to extra innings and set the stage for Theriot’s walk-off hit.

7. Sept. 12, 2006 – 7 runs
Another game at Wrigley Field where the road team (the Dodgers) built an early lead. L.A. scored 4 in the 1st inning, 2 runs in the 2nd inning and then added a solo tally in the 3rd.
The Cubs offense came alive in the 5th, plating 5 runs thanks to RBI hits from Juan Pierre, Freddie Bynum, Lee and Matt Murton.
The Cubs tied it in the 7th inning with a pair of runs, took the lead in the 8th and then ultimately won it with a walk-off by César Izturis in the bottom of the 11th.

6. April 14, 2018 – 8 runs
On a rainy, blustery day at Wrigley Field, the Cubs battled back from down 10-2 to the Braves.
The Chicago comeback included an epic 9-run rally in the bottom of the 8th inning that culminated with Jason Heyward scoring a run on a wild pitch.
The Cubs ended up winning 14-10, scoring 12 unanswered runs to take down Dansby Swanson’s Atlanta squad.

5. July 7, 2011 – 8 runs
After 6 innings of play in D.C., the Nationals had put together a hearty 8-0 lead off Cubs starter Matt Garza and reliever Jeff Samardzija.
But then the Cubs found their offensive rhythm, scoring 6 times in the 6th. Carlos Peña hit a 2-run homer to tie the game in the 7th and recent inductee into the Cubs Hall of Fame Aramis Ramírez put his team ahead with an RBI single in the 8th.
After the Nationals tied the game at 9-9 in the 9th, Darwin Barney helped the Cubs reclaim the lead with an RBI double to plate Tony Campana.

4. May 30, 2008 – 8 runs
The Cubs trailed 8-0 and 9-1 through the first half of this game before rallying late thanks to heroics from the likes of DeRosa, Kosuke Fukudome, Jim Edmonds and Henry Blanco.
All 4 players homered as part of the comeback against Rockies pitchers with DeRosa’s 2-run blast serving as the final nail in the coffin.
A year before he found his way onto this list for a different reason, Wood picked up the save as Scott Eyre collected the victory.

3. June 22, 1999 – 8 runs
Back-to-back games against the Rockies, though this time the contest was played in the offensive haven that is Coors Field.
The Cubs trailed 9-1 after 3 innings but scored in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th innings to pull off a wild 13-12 victory.
Mark Grace, Sammy Sosa, Jeff Blauser, José Hernández and Henry Rodríguez all homered for the Cubs, who had 14 hits and 6 walks as a team.

2. Sept. 12, 1998 – 8 runs
This will be a fun viewing experience for current Cubs fans as they watch their beloved squad beat up on the Milwaukee Brewers.
Jeromy Burnitz and the Brewers scored 8 runs in the 3rd inning and eventually built a 10-2 lead over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
But a packed house (39,170 fans) got to see their team pull off a historic comeback, scoring once in the 5th, twice in the 6th, 4 times in the 7th and once more in the 8th.
Still trailing 12-10 entering the bottom of the 9th inning, Tyler Houston connected on a 2-run single to tie the game. Orlando Merced was called on to pinch-hit for Manny Alexander and drilled a 3-run, walk-off shot to right-center to send the fans home ecstatic.

1. Aug. 29, 1989 – 9 runs
The largest comeback of the last 40 years featured a tale of two games. The Houston Astros were cruising with a 9-0 lead after 5 innings of play.
The Cubs responded with 10 unanswered runs capped off by Dwight Smith’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Lloyd McClendon hit the only homer for the Cubs and Andre Dawson collected a double. The other 16 Chicago hits were all singles as the lineup featured 7 different players with multiple hits.
