Thomas Brown’s first message to Bears as interim head coach
Thomas Brown knew the situation he was walking into as the interim head coach of the Bears.
It’s a team that hasn’t lived up to expectations, that is amidst a brutal, six-game losing streak and a locker room that was clearly frustrated with results this season.
Brown led his first team meeting Monday morning and addressed the elephant in the room.
“I talked about making sure our house is right to begin with,” Brown said in his first press conference as Bears head coach on Monday. “The initial goal is to unify this football team. Everybody on the same accord, moving in the same direction, speaking the same language and attacking together.
“No more divisions. As far as the outside noise, we ignore it because it doesn’t matter, [whether] it’s positive or negative.”

After Thursday’s brutal, Thanksgiving Day loss to the Lions, where the Bears seemingly had an opportunity to at least tie the game, the locker room was in disbelief.
“Yeah, it was tough,” Keenan Allen said after the game. “I feel like we did enough as players to win the game.”
Less than 24 hours later, Matt Eberflus was gone as Bears head coach and Brown had been elevated to replace him.
Brown didn’t want to sugarcoat things and look ahead to Sunday’s matchup against San Francisco right away. Instead, he acknowledged the team’s situation and a plan to get past it and be ready to produce wins on the field.
He also said he’ll remain the team’s offensive play-caller, and Chris Beatty has been elevated from wide receivers coach to offensive coordinator. Defensive coordinator Eric Washington will call plays on the other side of the ball and Richard Hightower is still the team’s special teams coordinator.
“I also talked about majoring in the three abilities,” Brown said. “That’s coachability, that’s accountability and that’s dependability.
“That’s all of us, myself included. I’m not above coaching, I’m not above accountability. We’ll get that done together.”
