The Cubs red-hot offense just continues to impress

3 months agoAndy Martinez

If you didn’t know, the Cubs offense is hot.

Like, scalding hot.

The Nationals found that out firsthand Friday night.

The Cubs sent 11 batters to the plate in the 2nd inning, turning a 2-run deficit into a plush 5-run lead.

The offensive outburst comes just two days after an epic rally against Pittsburgh, where they rallied from a 10-3 deficit to win 14-10, sweeping the Pirates. In that series, the Cubs scored 41 runs in 3 games and on the current road trip (7 games) they’ve scored 70 runs through 2 innings of Friday’s game.

The big inning started with 3 straight singles from Isaac Paredes, Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson to cut their deficit in half. Pete Crow-Armstrong worked an 0-2 count into a 2-run double off the top of the right-center field wall, giving the Cubs the lead.

Two batters later, he scored from third base on a ground ball from Ian Happ. It was an impressive feat, considering the Nationals had the infield in and the ball was hit hard at Washington first baseman Andrés Chaparro. But Crow-Armstrong flashed his wheels, sliding in well ahead of the throw home.

Happ would score on a Michael Busch double. Two batters later, Cody Bellinger put the exclamation point on the frame with a no-doubt, 2-run home run to right field.
