The Cubs just pulled off something they haven’t accomplished in over 100 years

The Olympics might have come and gone, but the Cubs still saw Monday as the perfect opportunity to show off their speed.

And they accomplished something they hadn’t done in 100 years in the process.

The Cubs stole 8 bases off catcher Yasmani Grandal and the Pirates on Monday night in Pittsburgh, their most in a game since they swiped 8 on September 17, 1911, against the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Cubs went on to beat the Pirates 18-8 in the series opener to move back to .500.

The action started in the 2nd inning. Nico Hoerner had a 1-out double, took third base and then scored on a Pete Crow-Armstrong single.

That’s when the fun began. Crow-Armstrong swiped second base, the first of his 3 stolen bags and scored on a Miguel Amaya single. Two innings later, Crow-Armstrong drew a leadoff walk and stole both second and third base, the latter eliciting boos from the crowd at PNC Park.

Ian Happ (2) and Cody Bellinger both stole bases, too.

Among qualified catchers, Grandal has the second-weakest arm (73.4 mph) in baseball and the slowest pop time (2.18 seconds), per Statcast.

Last season, the Cubs swiped 5 bags off Grandal in a 7-3 win over the White Sox.

Amaya had his first-career 4-hit game in the win — he had 2 doubles and drove in 4 runs. In the 6th inning, Dansby Swanson crushed a grand slam — his first as a Cub — to break open the game.
