Sammy Sosa reacts to Cubs Hall of Fame accolade: ‘My numbers are nasty’
Sammy Sosa was honored and humbled to earn a spot in the Cubs Hall of Fame.
But in classic “Slammin’ Sammy” fashion, the former Cubs slugger also displayed his trademark swagger after earning a spot in the team’s exclusive club Friday night during Opening Ceremonies at Cubs Convention.
When chatting with Cole Wright and Jon “Boog” Sciambi in an exclusive interview on Marquee Sports Network, Sosa did not shy away from the amazing career stats he put up in a Cubs uniform.
“My numbers are nasty,” Sosa said, smiling. “I played hard. I never was thinking about the numbers – I was thinking about one day at a time. That’s why I produced so much. I never left any at-bat, I never gave away any at-bat. … It’s step-by-step and play with hunger. That’s what I did all my life and the numbers don’t lie. I was glad to do what I did.”
Sosa finished his MLB career with 609 homers, 545 of which came in a Cubs uniform (a franchise record).
From 1998-2001, he hit .310/.396/.662 (1.058 OPS) while averaging 61 homers and 149 RBI a season.

Sosa joins Derrek Lee as the Class of 2025 heading into the Cubs Hall of Fame. And even though he knows his numbers, he was still blown away by the honor – especially after making his return to Cubs Convention after 21 years away.
“It was amazing,” he said. “I have to say that I never expected that reaction. I was happy just to be here, to see the fans clapping one more time. You know the way that I do it – I put on a show. I’m glad that I’m here and I’m honored to be here today.”
And he’s certainly looking forward to the Hall of Fame ceremony and celebration at Wrigley Field later this year.
“It took me 21 years to get it,” Sosa said. “I’m here now. Everything that’s going to happen is gonna be great. I’ve been working for this.
“I also have to say thank you to the Ricketts family. They’ve been great. I had an opportunity yesterday to meet Laura, Tom’s sister. I want to say thank you so much for bringing me back.”
