Cubs bolster bullpen depth with waiver claim from Cardinals

3 months agoAndy Martinez

As the Cubs fight off injuries in their bullpen, they’re hoping another waiver claim can help augment their relief corps.

The team claimed RHP Shawn Armstrong off waivers from St. Louis on Friday. The team released catcher Tomás Nido to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Armstrong was designated for assignment earlier in the week after pitching to a 2.84 ERA in 11 appearances with the Cardinals. He was acquired from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline for outfielder Dylan Carlson.

The righty was a solid reliever for the Rays in 2023, posting a 1.38 ERA in 39 appearances with 6 holds in 39 appearances. He has a lifetime 4.13 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in parts of 10 big-league seasons.

His addition comes at a time when the Cubs’ bullpen depth is being tested. Julian Merryweather was placed on the 15-day IL during the Pirates series, Ethan Roberts exited Wednesday’s thrilling comeback with ankle soreness and Jorge López hasn’t pitched since Monday, after suffering a groin injury, per The Athletic.

That doesn’t take into account the team parting ways with veteran Héctor Neris earlier in the month.

Armstrong could offer some veteran experience in the bullpen and be another option for manager Craig Counsell. In his last 7 games with the Cardinals, Armstrong pitched 6.2 scoreless innings with 6 strikeouts and a 0.60 WHIP.

As the Cubs try and chase down the Atlanta Braves, their bullpen will be relied upon heavily.

Porter Hodge and López, if healthy, will be Counsell’s highest leverage options. Tyson Miller and Drew Smyly have both had solid seasons and will be options late in games. That leaves a mix of Nate Pearson, Daniel Palencia, Keegan Thompson, Roberts and Armstrong to step up into key roles for Counsell.

Nido, 30, posted a .377 OPS in 17 games with the Cubs. He was signed earlier in the season as the team parted ways with veteran Yan Gomes. Nido suffered a knee injury and underwent an operation in July. He had been rehabbing in Arizona.
