Hendricks’ 1st career shutout also came against the Padres, though this time in San Diego.
He needed only 108 pitches to dispatch the Padres, striking out 7 and did not walk a batter.
June 19, 2016
Hendricks was never known as a big strikeout pitcher, with his fastball sitting below 90 mph for most of his career.
But on this day, he racked up the whiffs, striking out 12 Pirates in 6 innings of 1-run ball.
Hendricks ended up leading the majors in ERA in 2016 with a 2.13 mark and notched a career-high 170 strikeouts.
Oct. 22, 2016
This is arguably the greatest start of Hendricks’ career, especially given the magnitude.
The Cubs were holding a 3-2 lead in the NLCS against the Dodgers with a chance to head to the World Series for the first time since 1945. That’s exactly what Hendricks was able to deliver, spinning 7.1 shutout innings while allowing only 2 hits and 0 walks.
Nov. 2, 2016
While the previous outing on this list was the greatest of Hendricks’ career, this one might rank as the most important. In a thrilling winner-take-all Game 7 in Cleveland, he went out and kept the Indians at bay by allowing only 2 runs (1 earned) in 4.2 innings.
It allowed the Cubs to jump out to a lead, though obviously the game went into extra innings anyways.
Oct. 6, 2017
After his heroic performance in the 2016 postseason, Hendricks got the ball for the first game of the 2017 playoffs and promptly shut down the Nationals.
He notched 7 shutout innings, striking out 6 and allowing just 5 baserunners (2 hits, 3 walks).

The Cubs eventually took down the Nationals in the NLDS but lost to the Dodgers in the NLCS.
May 3, 2019
Hendricks tallied 4 shutouts throughout his career and this was the most dominant.
He notched a “Maddux,” which is when a pitcher throws a shutout in fewer than 100 pitches.
In fact, Hendricks didn’t even come close to a “Maddux,” needing only 81 pitches to stifle the Cardinals.
July 24, 2020
After months of a shutdown due to the pandemic, Hendricks got the ball as the Cubs’ Opening Day starter in 2020 and responded with another shutout.
He limited the Brewers to only 3 hits and 0 walks inside an empty Wrigley Field, striking out 9 batters.
June 10, 2023
Hendricks missed most of the first 2 months of the 2023 season due to a shoulder injury. But in his 4th start of the campaign, he nearly secured his 1st career no-hitter.
He didn’t allow a hit until the 9th inning, ultimately tossing 8 shutout innings on 94 pitches.
Sept. 28, 2024
Hendricks made his final start at Wrigley Field count.
On an emotional day, “The Professor” neutralized the Reds with 7.1 shutout innings while allowing 2 hits and 2 walks with a pair of strikeouts.
It was a Hollywood-style send-off for one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
