On this day in Cubs history: Greg Maddux picks up 300th career win
Greg Maddux enjoyed a decade of dominance in Chicago spanning two separate stints.
After the first 7 years of his career in a Cubs uniform, Maddux left in free agency for the Atlanta Braves on the heels of his first career Cy Young Award.
He spent the next 11 years in Atlanta before returning to Chicago, where he notched arguably the top milestone of his career: his 300th win.

Maddux signed with the Cubs as a free agent in March 2004 and on Aug. 7, he joined one of the most exclusive clubs in baseball while pitching against the Giants in San Francisco.
Here was the Cubs lineup that day behind Maddux:
- Corey Patterson – CF
- Nomar Garciaparra – SS
- Moises Alou – LF
- Sammy Sosa – RF
- Aramis Ramirez – 3B
- Derrek Lee – 1B
- Todd Walker – 2B
- Paul Bako – C
Maddux had to contend with a lineup that was led by Barry Bonds (who had a ridiculous .600 on-base percentage and 1.369 season OPS at that time) but still limited the damage with only 4 runs allowed in 5 innings.
The Cubs had to rally back from a 3-0 deficit and Maddux left with his team nursing a 1-run lead (4-3). But in the top of the 6th, Patterson hit a 2-run shot and the Cubs bullpen took over from there.
