Flores long has been associated with the Bears opening, as someone who fits several aspects of what Chicago is seeking. He’s a no-nonsense, discipline coach and a creative play-caller (albeit on defense). He also has a track record as a head coach, where he led the Miami Dolphins from 2019 to 2021. They had a 24-25 record during Flores’ time there.
Minnesota qualified for the playoffs and will participate in the wild-card round, meaning Flores can’t conduct his interview until three days after the conclusion of the Vikings’ opening-round game, which takes place on Jan. 13.
Flores spent one year in Pittsburgh as a defensive assistant and the last two in Minnesota as defensive coordinator. The Vikings have become a force using Flores’ creative scheme to create big plays for the playoff-bound NFC North team.
Flores could be a fit in Chicago, but he will have some competition from an increasingly crowed field of prospective candidates. He also had some controversial moments in Miami, especially in his relationship with Tua Tagovailoa, which the quarterback recounted a few months back.
Flores is one of several coaches the Bears have requested to speak with this month. Detroit’s Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, Arizona’s Drew Petzing, Pittsburgh’s Arthur Smith, the New York Giants’ Mike Kafka, Dallas’ Mike McCarthy and Baltimore’s Todd Monken also are on the list.
