Cubs solve roster puzzle, trade Cody Bellinger to Yankees for pitcher

3 hours agoAndy Martinez

Just a few hours after introducing their new right fielder, the Cubs shipped another to New York.

The team traded Cody Bellinger and cash considerations to the Yankees for right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet, the team announced Tuesday evening. ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the news.

Just days after acquiring Kyle Tucker in a blockbuster deal from the Astros, the Cubs faced a logjam in right field. Along with Tucker and Bellinger, the Cubs had Seiya Suzuki there and Alexander Canario, who is out of minor-league options, as another outfield option.

“I think we definitely have some surplus there,” Hoyer said on Tuesday afternoon, just hours before the Bellinger trade news leaked. “We have a lot of good players trying to figure out how those fit together. So that’s certainly something we’ll discuss over the next little bit.”

Later that afternoon, the picture became clearer.

Tucker, a Gold Glove winner in right, figures to land the lion’s share of playing time in right, with Suzuki as the team’s primary designated hitter. Suzuki ended 2024 in that role.

The Cubs were looking to deal Bellinger after he opted into his 2025 player option. His contract made him expendable to the Cubs. He was set to make $27.5 million in 2025 with a $25 million player option for 2026. The option for 2026 included a $5 million buyout.

“Jed told us that they have some roster configuration issues that they have examined,” Bellinger’s agent Scott Boras said at the Winter Meetings last week in Dallas. “Cody and I have been talking a lot about it. Whenever the player is in this situation, there’s always an expectancy.

“But we also know that where Cody’s at in his career — where his contract is — he’s going to be going to a very competitive team if it happens. If he stays in Chicago, that’ll be a place where he’s very welcome.”

That contract was a solid price, if Bellinger performed like he did in 2023 when he posted a 4.4 fWAR with an .881 OPS, 26 home runs and a 136 weighted runs created plus, 36 points above league average.

But Bellinger wasn’t quite the same player in 2024.

Injuries limited him to 130 games and he had a fine season — 2.2 fWAR, .751 OPS and 109 wRC+ — but not in line with what he had remaining on his contract.

In Poteet, the Cubs are landing a 30-year-old pitcher with 24 games of big-league experience across 3 seasons with Miami and New York. He appeared in 5 games for the Yankees in 2024, posting a 2.22 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 24.1 innings. Poteet, 30, gives the Cubs pitching depth, something they’ve been desperate to add this season and someone who can start or pitch in relief.

“I don’t think you ever stop trying to address that,” Hoyer said on Tuesday. “We’ll continue to look for pitching. It takes a lot of arms, a lot of really good arms, to get through the season.”
