Cubs officially eliminated from MLB postseason contention

3 months agoTony Andracki

The Cubs have officially been eliminated from postseason contention.

The Mets beat the Phillies Saturday evening and, coupled with the Cubs’ 5-1 loss to the Nationals, the fate has been sealed for the North Siders.

The Cubs now sit at 79-76 on the season. The Diamondbacks and Mets currently hold the last 2 National League Wild-Card spots with the Braves still challenging behind them in the standings.

“It was a tough year, obviously,” Kyle Hendricks said after Saturday’s loss. “Just up-and-down. It just seemed like we’d catch steam and then couldn’t maintain it.

“Just a really up-and-down year. Not surprising we’re at about .500. Just how it went for us this year. When we played our good baseball, played fundamental, we could beat anybody. But we just couldn’t put it together for the full year this year.”

The Cubs are now 9-10 in September. They were 18-12 in March/April and also boasted a winning record in July (13-12) and August (18-8).

But for the second straight year, tough months of May (10-18) and June (11-16) sunk the Cubs and kept them out of the playoffs.

“It’s a bummer that it came to an end officially,” Patrick Wisdom said. “I feel like it kinda slipped through our hands, in a way.”

The Cubs have not made the playoffs since the shortened 2020 season and they have not won a playoff game since 2017.

After 4 straight 90-win campaigns from 2015-18, the Cubs have not reached 85 wins in a season since.

This will be a crucial offseason for Jed Hoyer’s front office as they search for ways to get this team back into postseason play on a consistent basis.
