Cubs prospects Moisés Ballesteros, Kevin Alcántara star in Spring Breakout
While the big-league Cubs were enjoying a team-bonding trip for the ages in Japan, the organization’s young prospects had a unique opportunity to showcase their talents.
The Cubs’ top prospects took on the Angels’ top prospects Saturday evening at Sloan Park in the Spring Breakout showcase game.
And right from the get-go, we saw why the Cubs farm system is inspiring so much optimism for the future.

In the top of the 1st inning, catcher Moisés Ballesteros threw out a runner trying to steal second base. Then in the bottom half of the frame, Ballesteros (hitting 2nd in the Cubs order) singled home a run and hustled into second when Angels right fielder Randy De Jesus bobbled the ball.
Ballesteros came around to score as Kevin Alcántara hit an absolute blast to left-center:
Later in the 1st inning, the Cubs notched another run when fellow top prospect James Triantos scampered home on a double steal as Cristian Hernandez slid safely into second base.
Ballesteros, Alcántara, Triantos and Hernandez all collected 2 hits.
Meanwhile on the mound, Cade Horton started for the Cubs and struck out 3 in 2 innings.
Horton (51), Ballesteros (68), Triantos (72) and Alcántara (89) are all ranked on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list heading into 2025.
Alcántara made his MLB debut in 2024 and the other three players could all wind up following suit in 2025.
Horton, 23, was the Cubs’ 1st-round pick (7th overall) in 2022 and was in the conversation as the top right-handed pitching prospect in baseball at this time last year. He reached Triple-A early last year before a shoulder injury cost him the final 4 months of the season.

Ballesteros just turned 21 in November and finished last season with a strong 68-game stint in Triple-A. Overall in 2024, the catcher/first baseman/DH hit .289/.354/.471 (.826 OPS) with 19 homers and 78 RBI.
Triantos, 22, played 26 games in Triple-A last season and overall hit .300 with a .773 OPS, 7 homers and 47 stolen bases across 115 minor-league contests.
It was such a great night for the Cubs prospects that Ballesteros and Triantos were able to spend time honing a different craft in the dugout…
The Cubs eventually won the game 8-3 behind the heroics of Ballesteros, Alcántara and Co.
