MLB rumors: Cubs offered Pete Crow-Armstrong contract extension worth up to $75M

1 week agoAndy Martinez

The Chicago Cubs efforted contract extension talks with one of their young homegrown players — as other MLB teams recently have — though they didn’t lead to a deal.

The team “approached” center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong regarding a contract extension, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported Saturday, citing sources.

The offer, per Feinsand, would have maxed out at around $75 million, although the length of the proposed deal isn’t known.

Crow-Armstrong, 23, is in his second full season in the majors and looks to be a cornerstone piece for the Cubs. He’s under team control through 2030, his age-28 season, so it’s reasonable to expect the Cubs would be interested in signing him to a deal that buys out his pre-arbitration and arbitration years. He’s eligible for salary arbitration in 2027.

The $75 million figure seems in line with other extensions that other young MLB outfielders have signed to buy out their years of team control. Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert signed a six-year, $50 million pact in 2020, Atlanta Braves center fielder Michael Harris II landed an eight-year, $72 million deal in 2022 and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio penned an eight-year, $82 million contract in December 2023. Chourio and Robert’s deals were signed before either had appeared in the majors.

Crow-Armstrong, like the other three, was a top-100 prospect and arrived in the big leagues with plenty of hype. Robert has dealt with injuries throughout his career, struggled over the last two years and produced 12.3 fWAR in his six years in the majors. Harris has a 10.4 fWAR in four seasons, and Chourio was a 3.9 fWAR player in his 2024 rookie campaign.

The Cubs center fielder was a 2.7 fWAR player last season, and his defensive prowess heavily boosted that number. He struggled at the plate to begin 2024 before a mid-season swing adjustment produced results, as he hit .237/.286/.384 (.670 OPS) with 10 homers, 47 RBI and an 87 weighted runs-created plus (wRC+), 13 percentage points below league average. He also had 27 stolen bases.

Crow-Armstrong is 12-for-60 (.200) with three doubles and six stolen bases to begin 2025, and has produced a 0.4 fWAR, tied with Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson for the fourth-highest mark on the Cubs.
