2024 MLB Winter Meetings Tuesday Live Blog: Free agent market continues to take shape
DALLAS — Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings continue at the Hilton Anatole Resort this week.
It’s been a more active few days compared to last year’s event, with free agents trickling off the board.

Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins is scheduled to speak to reporters later this afternoon.
We’ll keep you updated with our daily live blog from Texas:
5:10 p.m. update:
The Blue Jays and Guardians have made a trade.
Cleveland is sending infielder Andrés Giménez to Toronto:
Giménez, 26, recently signed a 7-year, $106.5 million extension through the 2029 season (with a team option for 2030).
He has won 3 straight Gold Gloves at second base but after a breakout season in 2022, he’s taken a step back offensively over the last 2 seasons (.674 OPS combined).
5 p.m. update:
The Cubs will pick 17th in next summer’s draft.
The lottery was held Tuesday evening as part of the Winter Meetings and the Cubs finished 17th out of 18 teams.
Head here for more on the draft order.
4:45 p.m. update:
Max Fried has a new team.
One of the biggest free agent names left on the market reportedly agreed to an 8-year deal with the Yankees:
Fried turns 31 in January and is a 2-time All-Star and 3-time Gold Glove winner. He garnered Cy Young votes in 2022 and 2020 and boasts a career 3.07 ERA and 1.16 WHIP.
The Cubs were linked to Fried early in the offseason but they already filled a rotation spot with Matthew Boyd last week and are searching for depth options right now.
The Yankees missed out on the Soto Sweepstakes earlier this week but pivoted quickly to Fried.
2:45 p.m. update:
Another quality bullpen arm is off the market, as veteran Yimi García reportedly inked a 2-year deal with the Blue Jays.
García has spent 2022-23 and half of the ’24 campaign in Toronto before being traded to the Mariners ahead of the deadline.
He had a 3.46 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 49 strikeouts in 39 innings last season to go along with 5 saves and 13 holds.
The Cubs are in the market for bullpen help and could benefit from some high-leverage experience.
12:30 p.m. update:
Agent Joel Wolfe talked a lot about Rōki Sasaki (more on that below) but also touched on Cubs outfielder/DH Seiya Suzuki with the media.
That includes the potential of Suzuki being traded away this winter:
Suzuki, 30, is signed for 2 more seasons at $19 million per year and carries a full no-trade clause, so he would have to approve any deal this winter (if it comes to that).
He had almost exclusively played right field during his first 2 years with the Cubs and began the 2024 campaign in the same way. But when Cody Bellinger returned from the IL last summer and with Pete Crow-Armstrong playing every day in center field, Suzuki was relegated to DH on an everyday basis in August and September.
He performed well as a DH (.298/.386/.461 slash line) but would like to play the field regularly, according to his agent.
That would be difficult on this current Cubs roster with Bellinger back in the mix. He won a Gold Glove playing right field, Crow-Armstrong is already a Gold Glove-caliber defender in center and Ian Happ has won 3 straight Gold Gloves in left. Meanwhile, Suzuki has had his share of struggles defensively over the past few years.

11:30 a.m. update:
Joel Wolfe, the agent who represents Japanese pitcher Rōki Sasaki (and Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki), spoke to the media Tuesday morning in the media workroom at the resort. Sasaki, arguably the most intriguing pitcher on the free agent market, was officially posted as a free agent and has until January 23, 2025 to sign with a major-league team.
“He’s paid attention to what his WBC teammates have done.”

11 a.m. update:
Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg announced that his cancer had returned in an Instagram post.
He had announced his cancer diagnosis in January, then in August made it known that he underwent his final treatment for the disease.
Those around the game took to social media to show their support for Sandberg:
Overnight update:
Mike Tauchman will stay in Chicago, but he’ll be swapping uniforms.
The veteran outfielder signed with the White Sox, per MLB.com’s Scott Merkin.
The 34-year-old hit .248 with a .723 OPS in 109 games last season. He was non-tendered last month and became a free agent.
The lefty was a key bench bat for the Cubs over the last two years, a piece they’ll have to replace this year. They could do that with a younger player like Alexander Canario, who is already out of minor league options and can play across the outfield.
The Cubs currently have a crowded outfield picture with 7 on their 40-man roster, 4 without minor league options (Canario, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki and Cody Bellinger) and their starting center fielder, Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Of course, a trade could clear spots in that area and allow the Cubs to piece together their bench differently.
