Cubs trade young pitcher to Yankees
The Cubs completed another trade on Wednesday.
The team announced they had sent right-handed pitcher Michael Arias to the Yankees for cash considerations. Arias had been designated for assignment earlier in the week to make room for right-handed pitcher Colin Rea, who they signed to a one-year deal with a club option.
Arias, 23, was added to the 40-man roster in November 2023 after signing as a minor-league free agent in 2021. The righty had yet to make his MLB debut.

Last season, Arias posted a 4.77 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 60.1 innings across 49 games with Iowa and Tennessee. Arias flashed some intriguing stuff — he stuck out 72 batters and had a 25.2% strikeout rate but struggled with command. He walked 16.8% of the batters he faced, including a 19.6% clip with Iowa.
The righty has had an interesting career arc — he was originally signed as a shortstop by the Blue Jays in 2018 but was released after never appearing in a game.
The Cubs signed him as a pitcher, and he spent 2021 in the Dominican Summer League honing his craft. The next season, he pitched stateside in the Arizona Complex League and Single-A Myrtle Beach and in 2023, he reached High-A South Bend after posting a 2.55 ERA in 11 starts with Myrtle Beach.

In 97 career minor league appearances (32 starts), Arias had a 4.25 ERA.
The Cubs needed to designate Arias for assignment to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for Rea. The 34-year-old will provide depth to the Cubs rotation and comes to the Cubs after posting a 4.29 ERA in 32 games (27 starts) for Milwaukee. He pitched under current manager Craig Counsell in Milwaukee in 2023.
Rea pitched for the Cubs in 9 games in 2020 with a 5.79 ERA.
