Cubs add veteran depth in Jon Berti to their infield

10 minutes agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs have added depth to their infield.

The team has added veteran infielder Jon Berti on a one-year deal, as reported by Fansided’s Robert Murray. The deal is worth $2 million with $1.3 million in incentives, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Berti, 35, spent the 2024 campaign with the Yankees but was limited to just 25 games due to a calf injury. In 74 plate appearances, he slashed .273/.342/.318 (.661 OPS). He appeared in 4 playoff games for the Yankees, going 2-for-11.

In 2023 with Miami, Berti slashed .294/.344/.405 (.748 OPS) and posted a 2.4 bWAR. The year prior he swiped a major-league-high 41 bags with a 2.4 bWAR. He was traded to New York in a three-team deal prior to the 2024 season.

Adding Berti gives manager Craig Counsell another depth option to their infield — an area they were thin on in terms of big-league experience.

The Cubs’ bench options on their 40-man before the addition of Berti were Vidal Bruján (201 career major-league games), Luis Vázquez (11 MLB games) and Ben Cowles and Gage Workman, who have not debuted in the majors yet.

Berti’s addition also provides cover at third base, where the Cubs currently don’t have a set starter. Top prospect Matt Shaw figures to have a clear pathway to win the job for Opening Day, but the Cubs made no secret that they wanted to add options to provide cover for Shaw.

Young players have routinely struggled in their first taste in the majors and having a veteran option can help if Shaw doesn’t hit the ground running either in spring or in the big leagues.

Berti has made 136 career starts at the hot corner, the most of any position in his big league career. He also can play second base, shortstop and across the outfield, giving him versatility to give Counsell options.

There’s also some question about Nico Hoerner’s availability when the season starts. He underwent right flexor tendon surgery in October and his status to return isn’t clear, so Berti could play second base and Shaw can man third if Hoerner isn’t ready.

The Cubs’ 40-man roster is full, so they will need to make a roster move to clear a spot for Berti.
