Brian Matusz, who had one memorable start for 2016 champion Cubs, dies
Sad news surfaced Tuesday evening that former MLB pitcher Brian Matusz passed away.
He was 37 years old.
Matusz pitched 1 game for the Cubs in 2016 and earned a World Series ring for his effort.
It was actually his last game pitched in the major leagues.
It was quite the contest, too. Many will remember the game – July 31, 2016 – for how it ended, with Jon Lester laying down a squeeze bunt to score Jason Heyward with the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning.
Matusz started that night at Wrigley Field, allowing 6 runs on 3 homers in 3 innings.
The Cubs bullpen combined for 9 shutout innings after that.

Matusz was originally a top prospect as the 4th overall pick in 2008 by the Orioles. He made 279 appearances (68 starts) for Baltimore before being traded to the Braves in May of 2016.
He was released by the Braves on June 1 of that season and signed with the Cubs two weeks later. After a few starts in rookie ball, the Cubs called him up to help in the big leagues but needed only that 1 outing.
