Craig Counsell reveals Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya to go on injured list

4 weeks agoScott Bair

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya will be placed on the injured list.

Manager Craig Counsell made that announcement after Saturday’s 6-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Amaya suffered a left oblique injury in the fifth inning while trying to catch a base stealer. He then was removed from the game after attempting a practice throw following a visit from the Cubs’ training staff.

“It was on the throw down to second base, when (Reds shortstop Elly) De La Cruz stole a base,” Amaya told reporters after the game. “I felt some discomfort in there immediately. I tried to throw again but, sadly, I couldn’t (stay) in the game.”

Amaya said he will receive imaging on the injured oblique Tuesday after the team returns to Chicago. Sunday’s game is the last of a six-game road trip.

This is the third left oblique injury the Cubs had dealt with since May 9. Cubs left fielder Ian Happ had one and returned from the IL on Monday. That’s when relief pitcher Porter Hodge experienced a similar injury and also was placed on the IL.

Now Amaya is going through it, and he’ll miss a minimum of 10 days.

Counsell didn’t volunteer to on-site reporters who would come up from Triple-A to replace Amaya. While the Cubs have excellent depth with Carson Kelly available for full-time duty, odds seems great they will add another catcher.

Losing Amaya is a blow, even with Kelly available. The 26-year-old is slashing .280/.313/.505 with four home runs and 25 RBI in a productive start to his season.

“He has, all-around, played really well,” Counsell told reporters in Cincinnati. “He has swung the bat really, really well. The RBIs, it’s hard to say they’re going to continue, but he has had a number of big hits.

“We’ll hope for the best (with his injury).”

Amaya wanted to wait on imaging before assessing the setback, but he’ll miss being on the Cubs’ active roster for however long he’s on the IL.

“I’m a competitor,” he said. “I love to be on the field, especially with this team. It’s sad that I’m going to be out. I don’t know for how long, but, from the outside, I’ll be rooting for the team.”
