Michaela Onyenwere wanting to be ‘a sponge’ with new Sky team
The Chicago Sky brought forward Michaela Onyenwere over through the Kahleah Copper trade, making this her third team in three years and involved in a trade for the second time.
“Being traded a second time isn’t always easy. Obviously things happen for a reason,” Onyenwere said at Media Day. “When I spoke to [Teresa Weatherspoon] on the phone, I was so motivated. They were so excited to have me and that’s very encouraging as a player to have a coach that really believes in you from the jump.”
As the 2021 Rookie of the Year got comfortable within the brand new regime, Onyenwere approached the 2024 season as a way to absorb as much knowledge and experience she can from her fellow players as well as her head coach in Teresa Weatherspoon.
“Just to be able to be coached by her and have the opportunity, I’m a sponge every single day. Just wanting to take in all that she has, all the insight, all the advice she’s been through and lived and experienced,” Onyenwere said.
