Mexican soccer star Henry Martín shares excitement before throwing out first pitch at Cubs game
Henry Martín has played at some of the highest levels in professional soccer.
The 31-year-old has represented his home country, Mexico, in the World Cup, scoring a goal against Saudi Arabia in 2022, won a bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics and took home 3 league titles in the Mexican League.
But Saturday was still a special day for him.
Martín has been to baseball games as a fan, but never had the opportunity to be on the field of a professional stadium — until he was at historic Wrigley Field on Friday to throw out the first pitch before the Cubs’ 6-3 win over the Cardinals.
“It’s really exciting, really fun to see all the fans, all the people and to finally be able to meet MLB players,” Martín said before throwing out the first pitch.
Martín was in town with Club America, his club team in Mexico, as they played a friendly match against Aston Villa of England on Saturday at Soldier Field. He was part of a jersey exchange with fellow Mexicans Isaac Paredes and Javier Assad.
“Two Mexican players that are idols in Mexico and have grown a lot and are raising the name of our country, Mexico,” Martín said. “So, we have to come here and support them. It’s a nice to have the opportunity to meet them here.”
