Mexican band Grupo Firme share special moment with Cubs’ Javier Assad at Wrigley Field

3 months agoAndy Martinez

Through his first season-and-a-half or so in the major leagues, Javier Assad had the same pitcher warm-up song — “Gracias” by Mexican band Grupo Firme.

Grupo Firme — one of the top musical artists on Spanish charts with nearly 20 million monthly listens, per Spotify — is from Tijuana, Mexico, like Assad. They’re his favorite band, so using that song was an ode to his hometown and his beloved band.

Friday was a special day for Assad.

The band was in town — they’re performing Friday night in suburban Tinley Park as part of their concert tour — and stopped off at historic Wrigley Field before their show. The band’s lead singer, Eduin “Caz” Cazares, was throwing out the first pitch and the group was meeting Assad on the field pregame.

Grupo Firme and Assad chatted and hung out on the field at Friendly Confines for nearly an hour. The group donned custom home white Cubs jerseys and Assad brought them signed baseballs and hats. Catcher Miguel Amaya, also a fan, brought out signed bats before meeting them, too.

In that time together, Assad showed Cazares how to properly execute a first pitch.

“I’m not that good,” Cazares said with a hearty laugh.

The training paid off.

Cazares fired a perfect strike to Assad during the first pitch, with his bandmates behind him celebrating the throw and moment.

“Honestly, I was waiting a long time for this, to be able to meet them,” Assad said. “To be able to meet them here, well, I’m really happy for that.”
