Cliff Floyd explains Cubs rookie Matt Shaw’s leg kick when he’s hitting

2 months agoTom Prizeman

Cliff Floyd knows a thing or two about using a leg kick while hitting in the major leagues.

The 17-year MLB veteran on Thursday night compared his leg kick and how it evolved over the course of his career to highly touted Cubs prospect Matt Shaw and how his stance might evolve in 2025.

Floyd and Marquee Sports Network player development analyst Lance Brozdowski discussed the evolution of Floyd’s leg kick on a “Cubs Pregame Live!” segment dubbed “Kickin It With Cliff,” with the former major leaguer noting his started with a dramatic flourish in 1993 but, by the end of his career, had become much more subdued.

“We had conversations about how I might not be able to do the big leg kick consistently because my timing was off,” Floyd said. “Later on, I was just like, ‘Let’s just try to get to the baseball, A to B, as quick as you can, because you ain’t going to be able to get to some of these baseballs coming.’ But that’s part of the game, that’s a part of growing.”

Shaw, 23, has a big leg kick similar to Floyd’s early in his career. Shaw has used that leg kick throughout his career at the University of Maryland and his time in the minor leagues, slugging 21 homers and posting an .867 OPS across Double-A and Triple-A last season. But Floyd has some concerns about how that will translate at the big-league level.

“He does make the adjustment with two strikes, so he is thinking on the fly, which you actually like for a youngster,” Floyd said. “I just believe in the minor leagues you can get away with a little more of this, because these guys are not as good as the big-league pitchers.”

Shaw did show signs of struggling against off-speed stuff in 35 Triple-A games in 2024, posting a .300 slugging percentage and a 32 percent hard-hit rate on breaking balls, compared to a .700 slugging percentage and a 42 percent hard-hit rate on fastballs.

Floyd and Brozdowski pointed out that many big leaguers, such as 2024 Hall of Famer Adrián Beltré, have had success with unusual swings, but both predicted Shaw would make a change to his swing at some point this season.
