Matt Eberflus takes accountability after crushing Bears loss
CHICAGO — Matt Eberflus heard the chants from Bears fans calling for his job in the waning moments of Sunday’s 19-3 loss to the Patriots at Soldier Field.
But he also knows he can’t spend much time thinking about that.
He has to digest it and move on.
The Bears are teetering on the edge of a breaking point in the 2024 season, having dropped 3 straight games to fall to 4-5 overall.
That included a loss at home — where the Bears had won 8 games in a row entering Sunday — against the rebuilding Patriots in which Caleb Williams and the offense mustered only 69 net yards passing.

Bears fans made their frustration with Eberflus known after the performance.
“Just get back to work. I know it’s part of the job,” Eberflus said. “It’s part of it, but you’ve got to stand strong and you’ve got to be the same leader you’ve always been and make the necessary adjustments that you need to make.
“Be strong and courageous throughout it all; look each other in the eye, tell each other the truth, and that’s how I know to do it.”
The Bears are now 14-29 under Eberflus over the last 3 seasons.

This loss was a backbreaker, as the game represented a prime chance for the Bears to right the ship and create some momentum into a stretch of their schedule where they play 6 of the final 8 games against NFC North opponents (all of whom are in the playoff picture currently).
Following the loss to the Patriots, Eberflus took full responsibility for his team’s performance.
“Accepting accountability for everything,” Eberflus said. “Looking inward at myself first and that’s what I ask the players to do too and the coaches. We’ve got to take a good, hard look at everything that we’re doing and play good, complementary football.”
Throughout his postgame press conference, Eberflus stressed the importance of the Bears pulling together to try to climb out of these current struggles — which is the same message he delivered to his players.
“We’ve got to take a hard look, inward look, accept accountability and be accountable to the guy to the right and the guy to the left,” he said. “That’s how you do this thing when you have adversity like this. That’s how you pull together and that’s the only answer you can have.
“But again, like I said, I’ll take full responsibility for it.”
Eberflus clarified that he was taking responsibility for the entire “operation,” all facets of the team during a game in which the Bears were dominated from beginning to end by the Patriots.
His players echoed the same message as Eberflus in the locker room after the game.
“You can’t splinter,” receiver DJ Moore said. “You can’t go apart right now. We’re down, but we have to come together.”

As frustrating as this recent stretch has been for the Bears, Eberflus remains confident he and the coaching staff won’t lose the locker room.
“No, I don’t think so,” Eberflus said. “I believe in those guys. They have faith in us working together. I believe in our football team. I believe in the leaders in the football team. And we’ll just have to get back to work.”
