Lionel Messi’s visit helps Chicago Fire set club attendance record
Chicago Fire FC history was made Sunday at Soldier Field during their match against Inter Miami CF.
A club-record 62,358 fans attended the match, eager not only to see the Fire win but also glimpse the greatness of Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi, one of the greatest players to ever set foot on the pitch.
Sunday’s game broke the previous club attendance record of 62,124, set in 2023 when Inter Miami visited but lost 4-1 to the Fire. Messi didn’t have the chance to play in that game, but he received a hero’s welcome Sunday.
The match ended in a 0-0 draw, as the Fire (3-3-2), who sit eighth in the Eastern Conference, posted their first shutout of the season and became the first MLS team to keep Inter Miami (4-3-0) from scoring.
Soldier Field, also home to the NFL’s Chicago Bears, seats 63,500, and the Fire played there for 1998 to 2005, then moved back in 2020 after going to now-Seat Geek Stadium (28,000-seat capacity) in Bridgeview, Ill.
