Kyle Tucker delivers first signature moment in historic Cubs win at Wrigley

1 month agoTom Prizeman

When Kyle Tucker stepped up in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday at Wrigley Field, he had a chance to cap one of the most chaotic games in recent memory with one final firework.

And the first-year Cub delivered, launching a two-run homer into the right field bleachers to give the Cubs the win and earn his first signature moment with the franchise.

“It was a pretty cool moment just to see everyone cheering,” Tucker said postgame to reporters. “Overall, I think everyone was pretty happy with the win.”

The home run was part of a 16-run eighth inning that caused a roller coaster of emotions. The Cubs led 7-1 before the visiting Diamondbacks hung a 10 spot on the board in the top half of the frame, taking an 11-7 lead.

Following a Carson Kelly three-run homer (the second of the day for the catcher), Ian Happ slapped a single into left field to bring Tucker to the plate against left-handed reliever Joe Mantiply. Tucker turned on the first pitch he saw, sending it into the bleachers for his team leading sixth home run.

“I think he tried to go sinker in, and he left it a little bit over the plate,” Tucker said of the pitch he homered on. “I just put a good swing on it, so it worked out well.”

For Tucker, it is just another reason why many fans and media in Chicago believe he is worthy of a lengthy contract extension. Tucker was acquired from Houston in a trade this offseason and will be a free agent after the season.

Tucker seems to have settled in so far in his first season at Wrigley and says he has appreciated how the fans have embraced him.

“These fans come out, essentially every single game and pack the stadium out,” Tucker said. “We wanna come out there and win games and put on a show for them. That’s just respecting them coming out here and supporting us.”

Cubs fans hope that they can watch Tucker have moments like he did on Friday at Wrigley for years to come.
