Kyle Hendricks reflects on 11-year Cubs tenure, admits ‘it goes so fast’

1 month agoJack McDonaugh

Chicago Cubs fans most likely find it odd to see Kyle Hendricks in a Los Angeles Angels uniform.

That feeling is mutual.

The veteran right-hander, who spent 11 seasons in Cubs blue, is wearing his hometown Angels’ red this season, and he joined “Foul Territory” on Friday to discuss his new team, his future and, of course, some Chicago memories.

“I think it was more weird for everyone else, you know the change, coming to the Angels,” Hendricks stated about moving on from the Cubs this past offseason “… When you’re growing up [in travel ball], you’re moving teams.”

Still, though, The Professor reminisced about his time at Wrigley Field.

“It goes so fast. … For a lot of us, man, we were young,” Hendricks said on the podcast that aired on Marquee Sports Network. “That young corps that was coming up, we were 24, 25, going to the playoffs and then winning the World Series in the first couple years. You’re just like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is what happens in the big leagues, right?’ And it’s completely not true. It’s so hard to do that and get back there every single year, so that’s where’s the reminiscing comes, is realizing how good of a group we had year after year. …

“There’s so many memories, and when it’s all over, I’ll be able to look back more and reminisce more on all that,” Hendricks added.

Hendricks also made it clear that the city of Chicago’s favorite Cub from that 2016 World Series championship team was Anthony Rizzo.

“I think that one’s pretty clear, man,” Hendricks said with a wide smile across his face. “Rizz is Mr. Chicago.”

Hendricks also made it clear that he enjoyed and loved his time in Chicago, but for now, he’s focused on the present year and his performances with the Angels, with whom he has made two starts and owns a 1.64 ERA. The “Foul Territory” crew did inquire, though, if Hendricks could see himself coaching or in a front-office position down the road.

“I honestly don’t have confidence in myself to do that,” Hendricks said ” … If I were to go down that path, I think it’d take me some time.”

So, whether or not Cubs fans will see Hendricks in a coaching role is yet to be seen. Many seem to pushing that idea, but he has made clear he’s staying in the present.
