Cubs option Jordan Wicks, recall righty Gavin Hollowell from Iowa

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs bullpen reshuffling continues.

The team made a roster move on Tuesday, recalling right-hander Gavin Hollowell from Triple-A after left-hander Jordan Wicks was optioned to Iowa on Monday. Wicks was recalled from Triple-A on Friday and threw five pitches, allowing three hits and recording no outs in the wild, 13-11 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field.

He made another appearance Sunday, tossing two innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits. He was saddled with the loss.

Hollowell, 27, was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks last August and pitched 1.1 innings against the Phillies in late September. He throws from a funky angle – he’s a side-armer who sits 94-mph with his fastball and sinker with a sweeper to mix in. Hollowell has a whopping 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings with Iowa this season.

The Cubs bullpen is taxed – Cubs manager Counsell has had to rely on them a lot in the last week despite a couple of off-days built in. Counsell used seven relievers on Friday and then used Caleb Thielbar (two innings), Brad Keller (one inning) and Daniel Palencia (two innings) to cover the final 15 outs of Saturday’s 6-2 win.

Sunday’s game went into 11 innings after a rain delay, so the Cubs had to use five different relievers in that game as well.

Counsell tried to alleviate the strain on the bullpen during Friday’s game by turning to Wicks in the eighth inning with a six-run lead. The hope was Wicks would cover those final six outs and avoid using top leverage arms Porter Hodge and Ryan Pressly. Wicks surrendered three straight singles to open the frame and with slugger Eugenio Suárez due up, Counsell turned to Hodge to try to wiggle out of the jam.

Hodge allowed a grand slam – and then five more runs in a 10-run inning. The Cubs won the game but had to use Pressly to pick up the save, straining the bullpen even more.

The Cubs were off on Monday and will be off again on Thursday after a quick two-game set with the Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs also traded for veteran southpaw Drew Pomeranz Monday to help add another depth option into the bullpen mix.
