Injury causes Cubs to shake up catching corps

3 months agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs seemed to have finally found some stability in the catching department.

Until the injury bug hit.

Tomás Nido landed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Thursday, with a right knee sprain. The Cubs selected the contract of veteran backstop Christian Bethancourt to take his place and serve as Miguel Amaya’s backup. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team transferred Ben Brown to the 60-day IL.

Nido, who was signed as a free agent a month ago, had made 15 starts for the Cubs. Amidst struggles from Amaya and veteran Yan Gomes to open the season, the Cubs opted to move in a different direction, designating the veteran Gomes for assignment and bringing on Nido from the Mets.

The Cubs signed Bethancourt, 32, to a minor league deal on July 4. He appeared in 7 games for the I-Cubs, going 5-for-26 (.192). Bethancourt has appeared in parts of 8 seasons, hitting .226 with 32 home runs in 403 games. He appeared in 102 games (89 starts) in 2023 with the Rays, hitting .225 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI.

The Panamanian-born backstop was claimed off waivers by the Guardians in the offseason and then traded to the Marlins for cash. He had a .466 OPS in 38 games with the Marlins before being designated for assignment in late June.

Bethancourt will provide cover to the 25-year-old Amaya, who has had a whirlwind first full season in the majors. Amaya took over as the starter from Gomes to open the year, then, after Nido was brought on board, shifted to a no. 2 role while he worked on a swing adjustment.

Since that change offensively, Amaya has been red-hot, in his last 9 games, Amaya is hitting .524 with a 1.314 OPS. He’s riding a 7-game hitting streak as he’s developed back into the Cubs’ starting catcher.

Brown, 24, landed on the IL on June 9 with a next strain. He’s scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Friday. The transfer to the 60-day is procedural, since he won’t be activated before the 60-day timeline is up.
