In stunning move, Sky part ways with head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after 1 year

3 months agoKarli Bell

The Chicago Sky made a shocking move at the end of September with the announcement of the departure of head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after only a season at the helm. Weatherspoon finished her sole season with the Sky with a record of 13-27 and 10th in WNBA standings

Sky star rookie Angel Reese first announced on Twitter and Marquee Sports Network later confirmed the news.

The team confirmed the move on Friday morning. Co-owner and chairman Nadia Rawlinson released the following statement:

“After careful consideration, we have decided it is in the best interest of the organization to part ways with Head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon,” Rawlinson said. “We are deeply appreciative of Coach TSpoon’s contributions to the Chicago Sky, and the energy and passion she brought to the head coaching role. We thank her for inspiring a competitive, resilient spirit across the team, synonymous with Chicago Sky basketball.

“We remain steadfastly committed to being a playoff and championship contender every year, and we will be embarking on a thorough search for our next head coach.

“TSpoon will always be a part of the Skytown family, and we wish her the very best.”

After the news became official, free agent Chennedy Carter posted her thoughts in a single sentence on the move: “I’m forever thankful for Spoon.”

The Sky are now on the hunt for their 4th coach in 3 seasons with only 6 players currently under contract for the 2025 season. They are the second franchise this season to make a change at the head coaching position after the Los Angeles Sparks announced the departure of head coach Curt Miller after two seasons.

Chicago also has two first round draft picks with one being a lottery pick. That pick won’t be determined until a later date to be announced by the league. With this move at head coach and the practice facility not being ready for the 2025 season, the franchise is setting themselves up for a difficult navigation through free agency – something they already endured heading into the 2024 season.
