Ian Happ scratched from Cubs lineup after collision

4 months agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs lineup took a hit before the series finale against the Cardinals on Sunday night.

Ian Happ was scratched from the lineup with left shoulder soreness. Happ was originally penciled in to lead off and play left field.

The 2-time Gold Glove winner crashed into the wall in the 9th inning of Saturday’s 5-4 loss to the Cardinals, attempting to catch Tommy Pham’s triple. Happ got a glove on the ball but could not corral it and Pham went on to score the game-winning run.

“He’s sore,” manager Craig Counsell said Sunday. “I mean, if you go back and look at it, he hit that wall pretty darn hard. So, his left side is sore.”

Mike Tauchman took Happ’s spot defensively and is hitting 6th. Nico Hoerner was moved from 6th to the leadoff spot in Counsell’s lineup.

Happ had slotted into the leadoff spot since the team added Isaac Paredes ahead of last week’s trade deadline. The Cubs are averaging 6.5 runs a game in that time.

He started the year as the team’s leadoff hitter and the Cubs are 13-7 in game’s where he leads off.

Here’s the rest of the Cubs’ lineup behind starter Justin Steele:

2B – Nico Hoerner
1B – Michael Busch
RF – Seiya Suzuki
DH – Cody Bellinger
3B – Isaac Paredes
LF – Mike Tauchman
SS – Dansby Swanson
CF – Pete Crow-Armstrong
C – Christian Bethancourt
