Ian Happ excited for Ryan Pressly’s veteran experience in Cubs bullpen

4 weeks agoKarli Bell

Chicago Cubs left fielder Ian Happ weighed in on the most recent acquisition of pitcher Ryan Pressly coming to Wrigley Field in the latest episode of “The Compound” podcast.

Pressly waived his no-trade clause to come to Chicago in the last year of his contract he initially signed with Astros and Happ commended the move not only for baseball, but also his family.

“That was pretty cool. I know he’s had such a great career in Houston and won a bunch of baseball games and been such an integral part of the backend of that bullpen,” Ian Happ said on The Compound podcast. “For a family decision to leave in the last year of your deal and to go to a new city has got to be a lot. Not only a new city but also a new Spring Training; instead of Florida, he’s coming to Arizona.”

Happ also sees how impactful Pressly will be for the young Cubs bullpen this upcoming 2025 season.

“Huge for us for a number of reasons,” Happ said. “One would be the experience in the backend of the bullpen and just his overall track record. Two – and I think it’s not being talked about a ton – is the fact that his experience will really help the rest of our bullpen.

“We have a bunch of young guys down there who have a ton of stuff but not quite the experience. Ben Brown, Porter Hodge-type of guys who can really benefit from a veteran who has done it for years and years and been very, very available. One of the biggest things I took away from Scott [Effross] when he got to big leagues was how much he latched on to a David Robertson-type of guy and how much he learned from him and how important that was for Scott.”
