How Marcedes Lewis provides steadying force for young Bears offense
The 40-year-old Chicago Bears tight end made NFL history on Sept. 29, playing in his 272nd game of his NFL career. That sets a new record for most games played by a tight end in NFL history.
“Shout out to big dawg. That’s pretty impressive. 272 games at that position,” Robbie Gould said on Bears Den Tuesday on Marquee Sports Network. “To be able to do that for a historic franchise and to be able to have him set that record with the Bears is pretty special.”
Gould has been in Lewis’ shoes when he was the old veteran in San Francisco when a young Trey Lance came into the 49ers organization. Gould’s presence and 15 years of NFL experience became instrumental for younger players coming into and adjusting to the pro level.
“What is nice about Marcedes is [the Bears] sign him in June because of his leadership, because of the presence he has to be able to teach and groom young players,” Gould said on Bears Den. “I do believe that was a piece that they were missing, and that’s why they brought him back. The best teams you’re a part of have that guy, whether its an alpha dog or whether its a quiet spoken leader like Brian Urlacher was. I do believe that veteran leadership is going to take this team through the highs and lows of the rookie quarterback and some of the other things that they’re going to go through. He’s going to be a big part of that moving forward.”
