How Cody Bellinger has adapted at the plate in wake of finger injury
Since Cody Bellinger’s return from the IL, he has been on fire and provided a spark for this Cubs lineup.
For the past 3 games, Bellinger has served as the team’s designated hitter with his middle finger not at 100% and unable to play the field. Despite the lingering finger issue, he has 6 hits since returning from the IL.
The Marquee Sports Network broadcast trio of Jon “Boog” Sciambi, Jim Deshaies and Elise Menaker detailed Thursday evening how Bellinger has adapted at the plate to find success so quickly off the IL. He is sporting a pad on his hand and he has also slightly altered his grip on the bat, using little effort on his middle finger while firmly gripping the bat with the rest of his fingers.
On top of his plate approach, Bellinger has also put continuous work in while in the dugout as his team takes the field defensively. Bellinger has made the effort to constantly keep his hand in motion whether it is by gripping the iPad, taking practice swings or having conversations with coaches.
As the broadcast was discussing Bellinger’s adjustments, he ripped a double into the right field corner in the bottom of the 2nd inning. And he eventually came around to score on a Dansby Swanson single.
