How a simple piece of advice from Dansby Swanson helped Christopher Morel find his groove again
Things weren’t going Christopher Morel’s way.
After a torrid start to his 2023 campaign, things weren’t necessarily clicking for him. In a 10-game span from May 25 to June 9, the 23-year-old was 1-for-28 with 10 strikeouts.
But Dansby Swanson tried to help get him out of that funk.
The veteran shortstop pulled him aside in San Francisco and gave him a simple message.
“When this game feels not good, Swanson came to me and said, ‘Hey, think about the first game when you came out,’” Morel told Elise Menaker after the Cubs’ 10-3 win over the Orioles on Friday afternoon. “Trying to slow the game down and get your pitch and be ready and be positive. Swanson helped in this.
“That helped me a lot. Swanson, for me, is a really good teammate. We’ve got a really good relationship.”
The advice worked.
Over his last 6 games, Morel is 11-for-22 with 3 home runs, 11 RBI, 2 strikeouts, a 1.545 OPS and a whopping 265 weighted runs created plus.

Morel has been a key piece to the Cubs’ offense that’s been red-hot this homestand. The Cubs have scored 38 runs in the four games at Wrigley Field and have posted a .362/.448/.539 slash line. Morel’s performances have helped carry that offensive outburst.
