Homecoming: Carson Kelly’s Cubs deal produces emotional reaction from the catcher and his family
In some ways, Carson Kelly’s deal with the Cubs was fulfilling destiny.
The veteran catcher was born in the Chicagoland area and even though he moved when he was young, he still grew up a Cubs fan.

“It’s pretty special,” said Kelly, who agreed to a 2-year deal with the Cubs last Friday. “…My dad grew up [in Chicago], my mom grew up there, my uncle still lives there.
“Just the whole atmosphere around Wrigley – I remember as a kid, we would go sit in the bleachers and you would wait in line and go up and you’re out there for batting practice, trying to catch a ball. I have pictures of me [as a] 10-year-old kid trying to catch the ball.
“So it’s special. Wrigley’s been there for such a long time – the history. Being there as a visitor, it’s really cool but I think it’ll bring up a lot of emotions and a lot of excitement when I put on the home jersey for the first time.”
After signing with the Cubs, Kelly said his dad and uncle had a lot of people reach out – many of whom they hadn’t heard from in a while.

It’s led to a lot of excitement for the 30-year-old catcher and his family.
“As a kid growing up, we lived in Oregon – my dad worked for Nike for a long time,” Kelly said. “So during the summer, we come home and Cubs games would be on because a lot of day games so that was the only thing on.
“We would watch the Cubs play. Those memories – all those things – really, really hits home.”
