Highlights: Cubs 1st-round pick Ed Howard
With the 16th pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, the Cubs selected local prospect Ed Howard from Mount Carmel High School.
Howard was ranked the top shortstop in the draft and grew up in South Holland and Lynwood in Chicago. At 18 years old, this is the first time that the Cubs picked a high school player with their top pick since Albert Almora Jr. in 2012. Howard becomes only the fifth high school shortstop drafted in the first round by the Cubs. The previous four players were Terry Hughes (1967), Shawon Dunston (1982), Lou Montañez (2000), Javier Båez (2011).
Chicagoans may remember Howard from when he starred for the Jackie Robinson West squad in the 2014 Little League World Series.
