‘He’s basically Babe Ruth’: Cubs in awe of Shohei Ohtani’s star power

2 years agoElena Shklyar

Earlier this season, Cubs players and coaches were asked the question: Who is the most exciting player in baseball?

This question didn’t prove to be too puzzling as one common name rang from the North Siders:

Shohei Ohtani.

“The one and only — the GOAT — Ohtani. That dude is just a different breed,” Jeremiah Estrada said.

“You’d be hard pressed to find anybody else more [exciting] than Shohei Ohtani,” hitting coach Dustin Kelly said.

In a montage that aired on Cubs Live! before the game on Tuesday night, the two-way player was recognized as a phenom in the league as both a pitcher and a designated hitter for Los Angeles.

“Shohei Ohtani being able to do it on both sides of the baseball is pretty incredible,” Brad Boxberger said.

“The dude’s like an ace pitcher and a 3-hole hitter, all in one. It just doesn’t really make sense to me,” Jameson Taillon said.

In the last two seasons, Ohtani has been named a two-time All-Star, two-time All-MLB First Team and Second Team, two-time Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter award and received the Silver Slugger award for best offensive player in both the American and National Leagues.

He won the AL MVP in 2021 and finished second last year.

“I don’t know who could be able to be like that guy. He’s just, it’s unbelievable,” Estrada said.

“He’s basically like Babe Ruth,” said Drew Smyly.
