Hall of Famer, Cubs icon Fergie Jenkins shares his expectations for 2025 team

3 months agoMatt Danielewicz

The Cubs have had the pleasure of including former players and Hall of Famers at camp to spread their knowledge to the current team.

Cubs Hall of Famers such as Ryne Sandberg, Rick Sutcliffe, Shawon Dunston, Mark Grace and Fergie Jenkins have been an integral part of this spring.

Marquee Sports Network’s Cole Wright had the opportunity to ask Hall of Fame pitcher Jenkins what he likes about the current squad from Mesa, Ariz.

“The Cubs look really good,” Jenkins said. “You know just the facilities, they got so many diamonds to work with and they got a lot of coaches. I just think that everybody came here in good shape. So I think we’re going to see some good results.”

One player that Jenkins was drawn to was outfielder Kyle Tucker. Jenkins views Tucker as somebody who could be a game-changer for the team this season.

“I think he’s going to be a dynamic player…the biggest thing is I [saw] him hit a home run yesterday in one of the intrasquad games,” Jenkins said. “So I think he’s got that type of power and Wrigley Field, with his swing, he should hit a lot of home runs.”

Craig Counsell is heading into his second season as the Cubs’ manager. One item that Jenkins would love to see Counsell benefit from in 2025 would be utilizing his pitching staff.

“I think he has to know his pitching staff. He can know how to handle them. Right now, they’re trying to utilize a better bullpen and I think that’s what this ball club needs,” Jenkins said. “They’ve got 4 or 5 really good starters, a lot of guys who are very very young, and that’s what it’s all about.

“I think similar situation can be here with [Justin] Steele, Shota [Imanaga] and [Ben] Brown. There’s a couple of guys that if they can show what they can do in the spring, they’re ready for the season.”
