Evaluating the 2024 Chicago Sky roster

4 months agoKarli Bell

The Chicago Sky roster is set for the 2024 season for the start of the new regime under first-year head coach Teresa Weatherspoon and general manager Jeff Pagliocca.

As a refresher, WNBA rosters can have a minimum of 11 players but no more than 12. The Sky added Chennedy Carter and Kysre Gondrezick off training camp contracts and waived 2024 draft pick Brynna Maxwell.

Here’s how the final roster stands:

Guards: Dana Evans, Marina Mabrey, Lindsay Allen, Diamond DeShields, Chennedy Carter, Kysre Gondrezick

Forwards: Isabelle Harrison, Angel Reese, Michaela Onyenwere, Brianna Turner

Centers: Elizabeth Williams, Kamilla Cardoso

Plenty of options in the backcourt

The Sky have some familiar faces returning in the guard group for 2024. Dana Evans is stepping into a leadership role as the starting point guard for 2024 while Marina Mabrey will provide her sharp-shooting abilities at the 3-point line at the shooting guard position.

Diamond DeShields is back in a Sky uniform after signing a 1-year contract with the Sky back in February. While she’s coming off a knee injury that sidelined her for all of 2023, her speed defensively and consistency as a shooter with her career average of 13.2 ppg provides reliability and a veteran presence on the floor.

Lindsay Allen came over on a 1-year contract as well in February after spending 2023 in Minnesota. While her career numbers don’t show much, being in Weatherspoon’s offense has showcased Allen’s court vision to find her teammates, averaging 4 assists over both preseason games while also laying in a combined 23 points.

Chennedy Carter came into Chicago off a training camp contract and proved why she deserved to be on a WNBA roster again. Her quick handles disrupt many defenders, allowing her to create driving lanes or dish the ball off to one of the posts inside. Her average of 11.5 points over two preseason games adds an offensive threat while her quick hands to poke the ball away from opponents align with the defensive identity this Sky team wants to have.

Kysre Gondrezick fills in the final spot within the guards. Gondrezick’s limited experience in the WNBA with just 19 regular season games in 2021 can be a worry, but she provides a wide shooting range and is an extra depth piece to give others their ability to gain some useful rest minutes.

Big bigs in the frontcourt

The Chicago Sky lacked depth and size in the post group last season due to a flurry of injuries throughout 2023. With the drafting of Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese along with the free agency additions, size is one thing they have plenty of in 2024.

Elizabeth Williams is entering her 10th year in the WNBA and is taking on a mentorship role with Cardoso joining her in the center position. However, with Cardoso’s current shoulder injury sidelining the 6-foot-7 center for 4 to 6 weeks, the forward group will have to step up and lend Williams a hand inside.

Enter Angel Reese who has showcased her versatility on both ends of the floor in both preseason games for the Sky. She’s racked up 13 points and 2 steals in each game with a combined 14 rebounds in both contests. The 2023 NCAAW National Champion is poised to have one of the smoother transitions from college to the pros.

Isabelle Harrison is returning from injury after sitting out all of 2023 due to a knee injury. She finally found the bottom of the net in the second preseason game against the New York Liberty. Her shooting versatility as well as her fast defensive hands provide a much needed dual threat as the Sky continue to find their chemistry and rhythm offensively.

Michaela Onyenwere is joining her third team in four years after coming to Chicago as part of the Kahleah Copper trade. The 2021 WNBA Rookie of the Year is a post player in a guard’s body. Her speed and ability to find her teammates with her 1.3 assist average as a forward provides a lot of flexibility for Weatherspoon when it comes to lineup construction.

Brianna Turner also came to the Sky as a part of the Copper trade in February. The 6-foot-3 forward provides another size piece for Weatherspoon to give Williams and others valuable rest minutes. Turner’s ability to create space in the paint and find ways to be there as a putback connoisseur and rebounder with her 5.1 career average will allow the Sky to have second and third chances offensively.
