Derrek Lee ‘humbled’ by Cubs Hall of Fame honor

3 hours agoMatt Danielewicz

On a night full of excitement for the 38th annual Cubs Convention, two new members were elected into the Cubs Hall of Fame: Sammy Sosa and Derrek Lee.

As the former Cubs first baseman Lee sat down with Elise Menaker and Jim Deshaies on Marquee Sports Network following the news, Lee embraced the cool and special moment after hearing his name called to be part of the Cubs Hall of Fame.

“When you hear your name associated with the organization like the Cubs and with players like Billy Williams and Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandberg, it’s pretty humbling and special,” Lee said.

Lee joins Sosa in the Cubs Hall of Fame, reuniting again as the two played together for one season in 2004.

When Lee came to the majors in 1998 as a rookie with the San Diego Padres, the memory of Sosa’s historic run in the month of June left Lee speechless.

“I got to play with Sammy [Sosa] for one year. My best memory of Sammy was in 1998. I came here as a rookie and it was June of 1998. He hit 20 home runs in that month and I think he had 5 in the series we played him. I’d never seen balls go out of the park like that. Sammy was the star of stars and the fans loved him so it was pretty cool,” Lee said.

With all former and current Cubs players attending the Cubs Convention, Lee is thankful and praised Cubs fans throughout the years.

“There’s nothing like Cubs fans,” Lee said. “They’re behind you unconditionally, support you through tough times. They’re true fans of the game, true fans of the team. We thoroughly enjoyed our seven years here and every time you get to come back here, it’s special.”

Wrigley Field remains a special place for Lee and he understands the draw for current players who want to sign with the Cubs.

“I think that’s the driving force of guys wanting to be here,” Lee said. “The guys on the 2016 team got to do it. Everyone wanted to be that team to bring the fans that World Series. It’s a special place. Obviously Yankees are big and so is Boston but playing at Wrigley Field in the day with 40,000 Cubs fans, it’s hard to beat.”
