How Dansby Swanson pep talk helped Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong make amazing play
The Cubs’ defensive prowess was on full display Saturday night in the desert.
Dansby Swanson stole the spotlight during the final out of a 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, feigning a throw to first base on Corbin Carroll’s softly hit grounder and fooling Garrett Hampson when the latter rounded third and ventured into no-man’s land.
Swanson, a two-time Gold Glove shortstop, is no stranger to heroics on defense — and it rubs off on the rest of the group.
That much was obvious in the fourth inning when Chicago center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong launched a bullet of a throw to nab Arizona’s Josh Naylor at third base after he tagged up from second.
“I had a nice little conversation with Dansby earlier in the game about using what tools I was given … we were thinking about how to use them,” Crow-Armstrong told reporters after the game. “I think that play was mostly an example of that.”

Crow-Armstrong already is a budding defensive star — he threw out five baserunners last season, tying him for second most among all MLB outfielders. He also recorded the sixth-most outs above average (14) among MLB outfielders.
Swanson was as impressed by Crow-Armstrong’s incredible assist, but he wouldn’t let him know just yet.
“I keep saying it was a great throw — I’m never going to tell him that,” Swanson jokingly said. “I think for him he’s got all the gifts in the world, he’s got all the talent in the world — it’s just about putting it on display and trusting himself.”

Swanson wants Crow-Armstrong, who continues to turn heads in what could be breakout season, to stay level-headed and believe in what he can do.
“He’s so gifted, and sometimes we can overthink,” Swanson said. “But he’s finding his way, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
