Daniel Jeremiah identifies position Bears shouldn’t wait to pick in NFL draft

The Bears own four NFL draft picks in the top 72 — three in the top 41. That’s a great opportunity for Chicago to find real impact players and satisfy several needs on the depth chart.

There are mix-and-match options with how to use those selections, depending on depth at certain positions and how the board falls starting with the No. 10 overall pick.

The Bears could go edge rusher early, or splurge on a top-tier tight end or running back. There is one position of need, however, that NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah said Chicago shouldn’t wait to address.

“In terms of positions that you probably don’t want to wait on, if you are dead set on getting an offensive tackle and you want to get your long-term left tackle, you’re going to want to do that with your first pick,” Jeremiah said Friday in a national conference call. “I just don’t love the possibilities of you seeing someone that’s going to be an upgrade over what you have once you get into the second round of this particular draft.

“So that would be kind of the thought process there. If it’s close with some of the other players, I could see them leaning in that direction and checking a tackle off the list.”

That could mean Will Campbell or Armand Membou or someone like that to the Bears in the first round, depending on fit and how the picks come down.

That might not be music to fans hoping for a splash at No. 10, especially after the Bears spent big on offensive line upgrades via trades and free agency.

While running back Ashton Jeanty and tight end Tyler Warren are top prospects at their positions and in this draft — there’s also some trepidation taking those guys that high — there’s draft depth at both spots.

“There are backs. There are tight ends,” Jeremiah said. “There’s a good bit of depth there. If they want to reinforce a defensive line, get an edge rusher, to me, like a sweet spot for them, pick 39 for an edge rusher. That’s a great area to find that guy.”

Jeremiah said the Bears have a real chance to make significant upgrades with their top four picks. While most focus will center on No. 10, it’ll be intriguing to see what the Bears do with their Days 1 and 2 selections.

“Somebody is going to go to them at No. 10 that they’re going to love and is going to start for them Day 1 and be an impact,” Jeremiah said. “I’m almost more excited to see what happens with their next picks because that’s going to be a fun combination of players they put together.”
