Cubs top prospect Kevin Alcántara showcases wheels in picking up first MLB hit

2 days agoAndy Martinez

The scouting report on Kevin Alcántara said he had some speed.

He used those wheels to leg out an infield hit in the 9th inning — his first career big-league knock in the Cubs’ 9-6 loss to the Phillies on Wednesday night.

On an 0-1 count against Carlos Estévez, Alcántara hit a slow chopper to 3rd base. He raced to 1st base as third baseman Kody Clemens fielded it bare-handed and hung onto it, not making a throw.

Alcántara would score two batters later on an RBI double from Dansby Swanson.

The 22-year-old was called up prior to Wednesday’s series finale in Philadelphia, with the Cubs optioning Miles Mastrobuoni. Alcántara is the Cubs’ 6th-ranked prospect and the 69th overall prospect, per MLB Pipeline.

“We feel like he can do a lot in a lot of areas,” manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game. “He’s earned his way up here. Happy for him. This is kind of the icing on the cake of a really nice season.”

Alcántara wrapped up his season at Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. He had been great with the I-Cubs since being promoted in early August. In 35 games at Triple-A Alcántara hit .292/.378/.469 (.847 OPS) with 5 home runs, 7 RBI and 22 RBI. Across Double-A and Triple-A this year, Alcántara hit 14 home runs with a .781 OPS in 111 games.

Alcántara flew out on the very first pitch he saw — a middle-middle sinker in the 3rd inning that he hit 94.9 mph to right field.

“I’m not shy,” Alcántara quipped to reporters after the game. “I need to show the people my nickname [the Jaguar]. My everything.”

In the 5th, he struck out on 3 pitches against Christopher Sánchez. In Alcántara’s third at-bat, he hit a soft grounder to Clemens at third, who fielded and beat Alcántara with the throw for the out.

The 6-foot, 6-inch rookie started in right field on Wednesday after Seiya Suzuki exited Tuesday night’s win over the Phillies with an ankle sprain. Michael Busch also exited Tuesday’s game after he was hit by a pitch.
