Cubs sign trio of players to minor league deals with Spring Training invites
The Cubs added some roster depth Thursday.
The team announced they had agreed to terms on minor league contracts with a trio of players, with invitations to major league spring training. Catchers Jorge Alfaro, Joe Hudson and left-handed pitcher Thomas Pannone.
Alfaro’s deal had been reported earlier this month.
Pannone has some familiarity with new Cubs manager Craig Counsell. The lefty spent parts of the last two seasons in the Brewers organization and appeared in 1 game with Milwaukee in 2023, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts in 2.2 innings. The Cubs had a clear need for left-handed relief help in 2023 — they relied on starter Drew Smyly down the stretch — and will likely have several southpaws in camp this spring.
Hudson, 32, has appeared in 18 major league games with the Angels, Cardinals and Mariners from 2018 to 2020. He spent the 2023 season at Triple-A Gwinnett, the Braves’ affiliate, where he had a .766 OPS with 9 home runs and 37 RBI in 69 games. He’s hit .167/.219/.200 in 33 plate appearances at the big-league level.
The Cubs had two players who were spring training invites make their 2023 Opening Day roster — Mark Leiter Jr. and catcher Luis Torrens. Several other invitees — Nick Burdi, Tyler Duffey, Anthony Kay, Matt Mervis, Jared Young, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Mike Tauchman — all appeared in a game in 2023 for the Cubs.
