Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson exits game with injury
MILWAUKEE — Dansby Swanson exited Wednesday night’s game against the Brewers with a left heel contusion, per the Cubs.
The shortstop left the game in the 7th, with Nico Hoerner taking his spot at short. Christopher Morel moved from third base to second and Patrick Wisdom came in to play third.
Swanson suffered the injury in the 5th inning, when he grounded into an inning-ending double play in the 5th with the bases loaded.
After the game, manager David Ross didn’t seem overly concerned with the injury. He did say Swanson won’t be in the starting lineup, but that doesn’t mean he’s out of the game.
“We’ll reevaluate him in the morning,” Ross said. “But we’ll have to see if he’s available off the bench tomorrow.”
Swanson was 0-for-3 before he departed the game, flying out to right field in the 1st inning with runners on first and second. In the third, he grounded into an inning-ending double play with runners at first and second. The Cubs will presumably employ a similar infield to what they did late in the game on Wednesday on Thursday in the finale against the Brewers.
Swanson has been reliable over the last 4 seasons. He missed 2 games from 2020 to 2022 and has missed just two games this season. He’s played in 83 games this season and has a .752 OPS with 10 home runs and a 3.1 bWAR. Swanson was named to the National League All-Star team for the second year in a row.
That durability was part of what made Swanson so appealing this offseason when they signed him to a 7-year contract.
