Cubs recall lefty Tom Cosgrove, send Ethan Roberts to Triple-A Iowa

CHICAGO — The Cubs’ bullpen churn continues.
The team announced Sunday that it had recalled left-hander Tom Cosgrove from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-hander Ethan Roberts.
Cosgrove was acquired via trade on April 10 from the San Diego Padres after he had been designated for assignment. The 28-year-old made three appearances with the I-Cubs, recording seven strikeouts with one walk over four scoreless innings.
Cosgrove was a solid MLB reliever just two seasons ago, posting a 1.75 ERA and 0.97 WHIP with one save and seven holds in 51.1 innings across 54 outings.
But he had a difficult 2024 campaign. He missed one month with left elbow inflammation and was funneled between San Diego and Triple-A El Paso. He made 18 major league appearances and had an 11.66 ERA with 1.98 WHIP in 14.2 innings.
Cosgrove’s addition provides Cubs manager Craig Counsell another lefty bullpen option. The Cubs had added veteran Drew Pomeranz earlier this week after acquiring him from the Seattle Mariners in a minor-league trade. Pomeranz had appeared in the last two games against the Philadelphia Phillies and likely is down for the series finale at Wrigley Field.
The Phillies have a number of dangerous lefties in their lineup, including Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, so the Cubs would have wanted another southpaw option. After this series, they will travel to play the Pittsburgh Pirates, who also feature some intriguing lefty hitters, including Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds.

Caleb Thielbar is the other southpaw in Counsell’s reliever corps. He has a 3.60 ERA in 11 appearances (10 innings).
Roberts pitched two innings in Saturday’s loss, allowing four runs on three hits. He has a 5.40 ERA in 8.1 innings across nine outings. He entered Saturday with a 1.42 ERA.
