Cubs react to controversial call late in win over Brewers
MILWAUKEE — The Cubs pulled off a thrilling 6-3 victory Tuesday night in Milwaukee but a controversial call delayed — and nearly derailed — the celebration.
Ben Brown tossed 7 no-hit innings and Hayden Wesneski and Mark Leiter Jr. combined for a scoreless 8th inning, setting the table for closer Héctor Neris to protect a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 9th.
Neris quickly induced back-to-back groundouts but then walked Christian Yelich with 2 outs.
While Yelich danced off first base, Neris got set to deliver a pitch to Milwaukee cleanup hitter Willy Adames but the umpires called the Cubs closer for a balk.

They ruled Neris did not come to a complete stop and awarded Yelich second base.
Of course, then Adames lined a 2-strike single into left field to tie the game and send it to extras.
Cubs assistant pitching coach Daniel Moskos picked up his first career ejection after the 9th inning for arguing and manager Craig Counsell said he believed it was not the correct call.
“He did what you’re supposed to do — stop and change direction,” Counsell said. “The league doesn’t call this, doesn’t call this, doesn’t call this and then puts themselves in the middle of the game.”
The Cubs put together a 5-run rally in the top of the 10th, but that balk call ended up playing a big difference in the game.
