Cubs infielder underwent surgery at end of season

17 hours agoAndy Martinez

Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner underwent “successful” surgery on October 11 on his right flexor tendon, the team announced on Monday.

The operation was performed by Dr. Ketih Meister.

The team offered no other details, nor a timeline, on Hoerner.

The 27-year-old won the 2023 NL Gold Glove at second base but was not a finalist this year. He was still solid this year, posting a 10 Outs Above Average and a 4 defensive runs saved, but both numbers were down compared to last year’s award-winning season (12 OAA, 12 DRS).

Hoerner slashed .273/.335/.373/.708 OPS/103 wRC+ with 7 homers, 48 RBI and 31 stolen bases in 151 games. Over his last 55 games, Hoerner posted a .759 OPS (.306/.342/.417) with 3 homers and 17 stolen bases.

This past season was the first year of his 3-year extension that he signed prior to the 2023 season. The deal lasts through the 2026 season.

Meister also performed Tommy John surgery on Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay earlier this season.
