Cubs hiring a familiar face as new third base coach

3 weeks agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs will have a familiar face as their third base coach in 2025.

Quintin Berry, a Cub in 2015 and a player and coach under manager Craig Counsell in Milwaukee, will be the Cubs third base coach, multiple sources confirmed.

Berry served as Milwaukee’s first base coach for the last four seasons, including the first three under Counsell. He had previously served as the Brewers’ minor-league outfield and base running coordinator.

Berry worked with the Brewers’ baserunners, helping Milwaukee excel in that area during his time. In 2024, the Brewers ranked first as a team in FanGraphs’ baserunning metric (19.7), well ahead of second-place Cincinnati (15.7) and the fifth-place Cubs (10.7). Milwaukee swiped 217 bases as a team in 2024, the second-most in baseball.

The 39-year-old replaces Willie Harris. Harris and the Cubs mutually agreed to part ways earlier this month.

Berry played in parts of 5 seasons, hitting .262 in 5 seasons. In 2015, he signed with the Cubs, appeared in 8 games, swiped 2 bases and was on the playoff roster for the Cubs during the NL Wild Card Game and the NLCS as a baserunning option off the bench.

Counsell became the Cubs manager last year in November, following the expiration of his contract in Milwaukee and after the Cubs coaching staff had been mostly in place.

Counsell has kept the crux of that coaching staff in place — pitching coach Tommy Hottovy and hitting coach Dustin Kelly are expected to return — with openings at first base coach, bullpen coach and potentially at assistant hitting coach. The team will also replace their strength and conditioning coaches.
